Yes! The Pantone Colour of the Year for 2019 is Living Coral. But if you stop there, you’re only getting half of the story. For me, the bigger and more important question is “Living Coral? Okay. But what do I do with it? How do I incorporate it into my day-to-day life?”
Most of us are unlikely to don the colour from head-to-toe or to change the colour of our walls, bedding, towels, drapes, or car to Living Coral! Thankfully, Pantone provides us with a selection of palettes focused around this outstanding shade. Posted here are a couple of my favourite palettes that have been put forward by the Pantone Colour Institute.
Pantone decribes “Focal Point” as “immediately drawing our attention like a beacon of light, PANTONE Living Coral warmly engages, vivifying the palette as it becomes the focal point in this understated and upscale, composed and cool color grouping.”
I would certainly agree with this assessment. My eye goes to the coral immediately! The greys, blues and greens are “understated and cool” as described, leading me to think that this palette would translate very well into men’s fashion and upscale modern décor.
As described on Pantone’s website, “Trippy” is “A palette of hallucinogenic shades with dizzying effects, the wildly hedonistic color range we see in Trippy is pure and unadulterated; an exuberant range of joyful color that speaks to irrepressible fun and spontaneity that includes the life affirming PANTONE Living Coral.”
Wow! Pantone has pulled out all the stops with this palette! As a teenager of the 1980’s, this brings me back to the days of dressing in fluorescent colours. As soon as I saw the word “hedonistic” I thought, “Yup. This is the eighties.” I am tempted to describe this as an off-kilter psychedelic rainbow – day-glow versions of all of the colours “between” the colours in the traditional rainbow. Whatever the inspiration for this palette or however it may be described, I think it will translate very well into fashion-forward women’s apparel, junior and children’s apparel, as well as cheerful décor for kids.
